Skincare 101: Wake Up and Smell the Roses
Here's why you should add rose water to your skincare routine!

Hi guys! If you’re like me, you’ve battled long and hard to stop breakouts. You’ve tried everything and are ready to throw in the towel. Before you do that, I wanted to tell you about how adding skincare products with rose water as the main ingredient has changed my skin for the better.
“It’s the time that you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important...” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
One of the leading causes of acne is clogged pores due to excess oil, dirt ,and other toxins. Essentially, when your pores are clogged, they become irritated, and acne blooms as a way of saying, hey, there’s something wrong here. While cleaning your face with a cleanser helps immensely, I recommend using toners with rose water as the main ingredient afterward to tackle that acne.
Rose water has been used as a natural remedy since the Middle Ages. The main benefit of rose water is its anti-inflammatory capabilities. Rose water soothes skin irritation by stimulating pH balance in our skin (rose water has an average pH balance 5.0 and our skin has an average pH balance of 4.7). Also, rose water helps hydrate skin, which is good because dehydrated skin can also cause acne.
One miss-conspicuous with rose water is the cost of adding it to your routine. Some companies capitalize on the fact that roses are a luxury good and that using rose water as the main ingredient justifies the expensive price tag. Here are the two rose water products that I use, where I get them and their costs.
Trader Joe’s Rose Water Facial Toner
$3.99, not including tax. That’s the cost of Trader Joe’s Rose Water Facial Toner that I’ve been using for two years, morning and night! And while 4 fl. oz. don’t seem like a lot, one bottle lasts me about 4 months. And don’t let the witch hazel in this toner scare you! Witch hazel is known for shrinking pores so think of this toner as a two-for-one deal!

Pixi by Petra’s Rose Tonic
Depending on the size and where you buy it, the price of Pixi by Petra’s Rose Tonic varies. According to Pixi’s website, the 100ml (3.4 fl. oz.) bottle costs $15, not including tax. You can also get it at Target and on Amazon, which are my go-to places to shop these days. Even though I use this day and night, one bottle can last me 5 to 6 months. This product is paraben-free, good for any skin type, and not tested on animals. It's a staple in my skincare routine and it's earned the five-star rating it has on Pixi's website!

After cleansing, I spray my face with Trader Joe's Facial Toner then I massage in Pixi's Rose Tonic. While you don't need to use both, I've found that using them in this order has improved my skin dramatically. My pores are smaller, my skin is more even and less irritated! One PSA though: do a patch test on yourself before applying any skincare product on your face. While I love these products on my skin, everyone has different skin with different needs and reactions. Doing a patch test allows you to see how you react to the product before you get too heavy-handed with it.
Final Thoughts: Rose water has saved my face from everyday breakouts while minimizing the effects of hormonal breakouts. Trader Joe’s Rose Water Facial Toner and Pixi by Petra’s Rose Tonic both get a five-star recommendation from me! I've linked them down below as well as the XOmandysue bodysuit I'm wearing in the main photo (you can use the code VIENNA35 for 35% off your order)!
This is Vienna, signing off! See you later!
